Search for the Light—Even in Your Chaos Friend

The Chaos Friend

I’m sitting in a folding chair in a big room. The speakers for the next Women’s Conference are being announced.

Through the long list of names, I only hear one name I recognize.

It is the one I would have least expected.

It is my chaos friend.

Her life, a series of hard circumstances and scarcity, began with learning disabilities as a child. Had she been in a different family at a different time, the disabilities might have been addressed. The poverty might not have been inevitable.

But instead, she bears the false stigma of “slowness,” a coinciding speech impediment, and a lifetime (so far) of lack. She’s had many ups and downs, actually more downs than ups, if you’re counting.

And they are inviting her to speak?

Do Not Gloat

I wake up. It was all a dream. The sunlight is streaming through my window.

But even in the light of day, even now weeks later, the dream sticks with me.

And the shock is wearing off.

I’ve known this friend for a few years. I’ve seen her get in some sticky jams. (I’ve even judged her for a few of them. Sigh. Shame on me.)

But I’ve also seen her bounce back time and again.

She lives rough, but she keeps moving forward. She endures hard breaks, but she keeps smiling. She leaves trails of mistakes, but she remains hopeful.

And I see it now.

Why, yes, she would make an excellent women’s conference speaker!

Despite her choices causing me frustration at times, she is a light in my life. She is another angle of God for me. She has as much of the divine in her as everyone else. She loves me. And I love her.

She walks in God’s light as far as her feet will carry her.

She exemplifies this truth:

“Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.”
Micah 7:8

Search for Light

As I prepare to spend time with God in 1 John 1 for 6 weeks this fall (“God is light” and “Walk in the light” and “He is faithful“), I hope to remember my friend with light, even in the midst of her often reckless lifestyle.

Perhaps what was only a nighttime dream in my sleep could become a reality for her in our wakefulness.

What we dream in the dark can come to life in the light.

Sometimes it’s hard to see the light. But the light is always here.

God is always shining. Even when our vision gets too cloudy to notice his brightness.

I want to see the light in dark spaces. I want to notice more light in already bright spaces.

  • Search for the light.
  • Greet the light.
  • Touch the light.

The 1 John 1 “Touch the Light” challenge resources are available beginning today. . You’ll also receive one email per week during the challenge with additional resources for 6 weeks, beginning September 12. Whether you want to read, memorize, meditate, or study his light this fall, you’ll discover a brighter world in the presence of God.

Do you have a chaos friend that shows you God, too? Thank God for them today. Share in the comments.

What Do You Wish You’d Known on Your Wedding Day?
—Grace & Truth Linkup

If you’ve been married one day or 50 years, what do you wish you’d known on your wedding day?

I started with a limp at my and Jeff’s wedding. Not physically, but emotionally.

My first marriage had crashed after a few years when my first husband walked out and found love elsewhere.

I wasn’t sure I would recover.

Through tears and years and more than a few missteps, my heart was finally sewn back together. God’s care was thick, rich, and welcome.

I was okay being alone.

Then God brought Jeff.

On our wedding day, I knew a lot more than I had on my first. I had learned from my first marriage that marriage could bring intense pain, lingering insecurities, and even a touch of cynicism.

But when I married Jeff, I wanted a fresh start. I didn’t want to bring my old baggage into a new relationship.

Through Jeff’s diligent patience and crazy love for me, then and now, I eventually learned more and more to let go of distrust, cynicism, and even fierce independence.

I did know on our wedding day that things would not be perfect. Life had already proven that.

But what I didn’t know was that even in its imperfection, there is a love that would allow me to be more myself, more known, than I ever had been before.

Learning to be vulnerable after being hurt can be a tricky business. You have to relearn again who you can trust. And who you can’t. We often get it wrong and pay a price.

But this time around, even when I didn’t always feel “safe” (I have a strong fear vein, y’all), I was safe.

I didn’t know it then. I know it now. Well, I’m still growing into knowing it more fully, that I can be me. Totally me.

And still be loved.

What do you wish you had known on your wedding day?

As our featured writer this week, Karen shares 10 things about marriage she wished she had known on Day 1.

Which of Karen’s 10 things resonates most with you? It’s (1) for me. Share in the comments, then add your own links below.

Share Four Somethings—August 2021

Each month I share four somethings: something I love, something I read, something I treasure, and something ahead. I’m sharing at Heather’s.

Something Loved

  • A NEW 6-WEEK BIBLE CHALLENGE

I’m excited to return this month to an activity I love. I’ve been working on resources (which is fun in itself!) for a new 6-week Bible challenge.

Typically it’s a memorizing challenge. But this time, it’s choose your own adventure!

Memorizing is just one option among many. You stretch it into whatever you want it to be. Read or memorize or meditate or study through 1 John 1.

Sign up Touch the Light 1 John 1

I’ll be memorizing along with the Facebook group at Hide His Word (you can join the group), but I look forward to adding in the other elements, too, as we go.

Get more details about the 1 John 1 challenge here.

. By adding your name/email, you’ll get all the resources. They’ll begin arriving in your inbox on August 29. You’ll also receive one email per week during the challenge with additional resources for 6 weeks, beginning September 12.

Something Read

  • BLOGGERS WHO ARE READERS

“Many people, myself among them, feel better at the mere sight of a book.”
– Jane Smiley

Reading is one of my true loves! Which includes reading books and blogs. Corinne Rodrigues has been hosting a blog series, #ReadersSpeak, on Bloggers Who Are Readers.

Corinne graciously invited me to answer her bookish questions. I had such fun talking about my reading life on her blog.

How would you answer her questions?

Something Treasured

  • A VARIETY OF FRIENDS

Maybe it’s cliché, but I treasure the variety of friends I have. Some are great for long talks about God; some are great for rehashing our shared history; some are great for counseling each other when we’re in crisis; etc.

I learned years ago to not expect everything from one friend, but that among many friends, everything is eventually covered.

We’re all in this together. I’m grateful.

Something Ahead

  • NEW JIGSAW PUZZLES

Is it weird to look forward to doing a jigsaw puzzle?

I used to be a once-a-year puzzler. Christmas break was the golden time.

But since the pandemic began in 2020, jigsaw puzzles have become a routine stress-reducer for me. (I finally got over the guilt of doing them out of season. See “Is It Okay to Do Nothing?”)

I know I wasn’t alone in this because for a few months in 2020, jigsaw puzzles were practically impossible to find.

Jigsaw Puzzles 2020

I’ve since gotten smart and tasked my husband Jeff with finding puzzles for me at yard sales and thrift stores. (That’s his stress-reducer, not mine).

He found several used puzzles a few weekends ago when he shopped the World’s Longest Yard Sale (he did NOT travel all 690 miles). I’m looking forward to starting one of the puzzles soon. (The seller assured him all the pieces are there. Keep your fingers crossed!)

UPDATE: The Fall 2021 challenge has now ended. But I still encourage to memorize this chapter using any of the free resources provided.

* * *

This fall let’s take an online walk together with Jesus, the Living Word, through 1 John 1.

“The Word of life existed from the beginning. We have heard it. We have seen it. We observed and touched it.”
1 John 1:1 (GW Translation)

For 6 weeks I’ll be posting on the blog and sending out resources via email to those who sign up for ways we can “touch the Light” of Jesus.

You choose your preferred approach to the text. You’ll receive resources to personalize your challenge. Mix and match any of the following:

Whatever your goal, we’ll be here for each other in community, providing encouragement, resources, and support in our encounters with Jesus.

We’ll officially begin after Labor Day, but let’s begin preparing our hearts now.

.

Have you participated in online studies in the past? What did you like the most about them? Share in the comments.

Last Month’s Challenge

At our last linkup we talked about spending time in three ways with your word:

  • YOUR WORD: Relationship with God
  • YOUR WORD: Relationship with Others
  • YOUR WORD: Relationship with Self

Did God give you any insights about your word and relationships?

What I learned with my word UNCERTAINTY is God wants me to lean harder into TRUST.

  • Trust he is at work in uncertain situations.
  • Trust his voice to speak to others when he’s asking me to keep silent.
  • Trust his compassion in me to practice self-compassion when I need it.

Knowing whether to move forward or whether to keep my hands off a situation isn’t always easy to discern. But trusting God to guide me and trusting God to guide others is all I’ve got. And it has to be enough.

That’s where my certainty can rest.

This Month’s Challenge

Choose three people talk to about your word before September 21.

Whether it’s in person, online, on the phone, etc., ask them a few questions, such as:

  • How would you define my word?
  • Do you see my word in your daily life?
  • What suggestions could you offer me to practice my word?

Sparking a conversation with someone else about your word can give you a fresh glimpse of it. Use their answers to motivate you to move through your word in a slightly different way than you have so far.

Make your list now of three people and tag yourself in a note to follow through.

This linkup will remain open from August 21 – August 31.

The next One Word linkup will be September 21.

If you’d like to receive a monthly email for suggestions about your word, sign up here.

You can also join our One Word 2021 Facebook group here for more interaction.

Who Gives You Strength?
—Grace & Truth Linkup

grace-and-truth-weekly-christian-linkup-its friday

While we all can receive strength from God in supernatural ways, we also can receive strength from each other (also a gift from God!).

In our featured post today, Barbara Harper gives us several examples in scripture of God using people to strength each other.
