Don’t be a bore
Today begins 31 Days of Books—an excerpt from one of my favorite books on faith each day in October.
: : :
Excerpt from Celebration of Discipline:
Celebration is a desperately needed grace for all those who are earnest about the Spiritual Disciplines.
It is an occupational hazard of devout folk to become stuffy bores. This should not be.
Of all people, we should be the most free, alive, interesting.
Celebration adds a note of gaiety, festivity, hilarity to our lives. After all, Jesus rejoiced so fully in life that he was accused of being a wine-bibber and a glutton. Many of us lead such sour lives that we cannot possibly be accused of such things.
. . . Joy begets joy. Laughter begets laughter. It is one of those few things in life that we multiply by giving.

I can tell already that I am going to enjoy these posts for the next 31 days! I’m excited to see how the Lord will speak to me through these topics that come up in your 31 days of books! Love you!
You’re sweet, Dianna. I’m looking forward to this series myself. ha. I’ve already enjoyed looking back through some of my favorite books to pick out an excerpt (except it’s hard to limit it!).
Oh Lisa, this is going to be so good! What a way to kick these 31 Days off!
;-}
Richard Foster is one of my favorite authors and Celebration of Discipline is one of my favorite books, so it just seemed fitting to start out of the gate with this one. 🙂
“We should be the most free, alive, and interesting.” That’s true. joy should mark us regardless of our physical circumstances.
I know this isn’t always true about me, but I want it to be more and more. Joy despite and in all circumstances.
I knew I liked you! This too is one of my most favorite books and one I still go back to time and time again. I attended one of his Revorare meetings a while back and am thinking of going to another one next year. Great idea for you 31 days series.
Glad to know we have this book in common as a favorite. Isn’t it wonderful? It’s been many years ago since I first read it, but I’ve returned to it over and over since then.
I’m jealous that you’ve been to a Renovare conference. They always look so interesting to me but I’ve yet to make it to one. Hope you get to go again next year!
You have 31 favourite books!? I have like six. This is going to be an interesting month.
I’d hate to admit how many favorite books I really do have. 🙂 I’m doing everyone a favor by limiting it to 31. I’m a book lover from way back.
Enjoyed this post : ) I’m looking forward to the others.
I’m always looking for a good read. I know this series will be fun to check back in on! Thanks for sharing!
Really looking forward to your posts! And I’m SO, so glad to be participating in The Nester’s 31-Days with you and so many other wonderfully creative women! As an English major, you had me at “Books” in your title. 🙂
