In reply to linda barton. I love hearing your experience with this stuff. I had never heard before about that number system but I can see how it would definitely make it easier to memorize numbers. I'm trying to apply a little of this as I memorize Isaiah 55. My "map" is my kitchen and every verse has a spot as I mentally walk through it. :) I do think it's helping!

It was interesting. I have read a lot of the “major system” that Joshua Foer refers to,
and use it some. Harry Lorayne’s books deal with that. Yrs. ago I read about the major system in a set of booklets written by Bruno Furst. The part of that which was most helpful to me, was how numbers can be converted into words. Before I came across that system, numbers had no personality to me, at all, and now they do. which, of course makes it more fun to try to remember the chapter and verse number of the verses I am memorizing.

It reminds me of an interview I just watched on Charlie Rose with a slam poet. There was a bit about where she talked about what memorizing does for her as a performer and a person. In reply to floyd. I'm impressed, Floyd. The only phone numbers I know anymore are ones from years ago. ha. Good for you for keeping your brain sharp--I'm sure that pays off in many ways (and especially when your truck was stolen, ouch).

I agree with you. There’s lot of things I don’t even try to remember any more because I can find it easy enough if I need it, but I need that Word within me, not just out there. I’m not saying everybody has to memorize scripture–it’s certainly not a requirement!–but it has helped me so much through the years.

While I memorize some scripture, not like you, but some that just stick naturally, I don’t have any contacts in my phone, even for business. I’m not sure how many numbers I have in my head, but I know that when my truck got stolen six years ago with my phone numbers in it, I didn’t miss it, I never used it. I just store them upstairs. What the mind can do is beyond amazing.
