I agree, getting to know people is the key. It’s very easy to make assumptions about groups of people but when we get to know individuals very often we realise these assumptions were wrong.

You are so right, Lisa – Jesus was a trailblazer, showing us the way to avoid contact bias. No person was outside of his very wide circumference. He showed love even to those many deemed unloveable, or at least undesirable. Getting to know the “other” is a good first step at eliminating contact bias.

Dear Lisa, THANK YOU for your gentle candor in helping us to understand “contact bias”! One of the biggest blessings (although it didn’t seem so at the time) was to drop this south Georgia gal from the 1960s right down in the middle of a Midwest urban alternative school. I was scared to death the whole first semester. Then I suddenly realized after Christmas that I’d fallen in love with my students. I will always be thankful that the Lord thought I was worth teaching some super hard, but equally important lessons.

The key here is to be willing to cross that line into the unknown when it comes to other people who appear unlike us on the surface. I was brought up to love my neighbor as myself, and to not be afraid to reach out to others whom appeared “different” on the surface. Jesus is our best example.
