Oh my, Donna! You've had such unusual experiences--I'd love to sit and listen to you tell stories about them each! I had no idea of your background. Yes, you've definitely earned your way out of this bias if anyone has. :)

Lisa, great post. I'm finding with the big things that happen in life, I don't put my head in the sand, but I get overwhelmed very easily. I have to give myself time to pray and process so I can figure out how to function. Such a great post!

Actually, Lisa, I do not have a problem with this bias! having faced several over the top "diasters" (evacuation by US military in black hawk helicopters under machine gun fire by local militants in Albania, while trying to maintain calm for my 3 children, was one fun experience), I have developed a keen sense for remaining calm and gathering facts. However I see this happen often in situations at the hospital with patient families.

I was in denial for about a week over the coronavirus pandemic. I watched the Johns Hopkins virus counts daily and finally the numbers convinced me precautions were necessary and life would change for the foreseeable future. I hoped things would be back to normal by March of this year...but it looks like not. I'm praying we can have a normal school year next year!

Lisa, as I read this, it occurred to me that the folks in Noah’s day—other than him and his family—were afflicted with normalcy bias in a huge way. So it’s a tale almost as old as time, I suppose. It’s hard to honestly face reality when we so badly want to believe it’s going to turn out a different way. I appreciate your tips for how to avoid normalcy bias. (And the humorous illustrations provide a bit of sugar to help them medicine go down.) :-)
