That’s wonderful that your pastor preached on Just Mercy. That book wrecked me, as did the movie. Both were so powerful and moving! I watched a few interviews with the actors prior to the movie being released, and they all seemed very sincere in conveying its message. Praying that the needle will move forward in our progress toward racial reconciliation.

And you’re accomplishing one of the hardest spiritual tasks of all, Susan: bridling our tongues. 🙂 I pray for discernment on knowing when to refrain as well. Thanks, friend.

Those quotes stood out to me, too, Yvonne. And because of where he was writing it from, Dr. King’s quote holds even more meaning (and importance!) than I can fully imagine from my comfy chair in the suburbs…. Comfort can be such an enemy, yet we all long for it, at least on the surface, often to our detriment and as a contributing factor to the harm of others.

You knocked it out of the park with this post. So many powerful quotes like this one, “If you do not do the work, you will continue to do harm, even if that is not your intention” and this one, “Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will” made me sit up straight in my chair and lean in to read more. This post is so good!

Thank you for saying that being nice isn’t enough. I fear this way of thinking permeates the mind of Christians and interferes with doing the real work to end racial injustice and inequality.
