I understand where you're coming from, Patti. We had similar bills put forth this legislative session in Alabama proposing requirements for Judeo-Christian prayers to be said in schools every morning, the Ten Commandments posted in every classroom, etc., but none made it through this year. The legislators almost seem to be in competition for who can bring up the most "Christian" bill, while missing the whole point of loving your neighbor as yourself. I feel like the American flag has almost been hijacked to mean something different too versus simply that we're proud to be an American. You state it well that it is 'worshiping' the country that could explain the difference.

I'm glad that you haven't had to deal with this, Aritha. It's been strange times in America. I agree with you that Jesus' core teachings centered on love. Unfortunately, much of Christian Nationalism feeds on people's fears.

I'm in complete agreement with you, Donna. I appreciate those who prioritize love as a top value. It's how I want to live (even though I often fall short!).

I agree with you, Olivia. I think the word Christian has been hijacked because much of the philosophies and fruit of this movement do not match up with the principles and teachings of Jesus.

Thanks for your understanding and concern on this issue, Lynn. I hear your heart. We have definitely been living through some strange and confusing times the past few years. I hate the many separations that are occuring as a result among families and friends. I appreciate your friendship!

Yes, this was another informative book. Hope your weekend has been a good one too, Martha. We've had to cancel plans due to storms (again) but it's still been a good weekend.

Exactly, Jean. I think people are often just uninformed. Granted, it is painful keeping up with some of this stuff because it is so discouraging. But when things do rise to my attention, I want to be alert to it.

Although I read your blog often, I don't usually comment. But I just had to say something about this post, particularly in regards to step 4, the separation of church and state. In my state's (Idaho) legislature this year, a bill was introduced that would REQUIRE a daily reading from a KJV Bible in every classroom of every public school. It passed the House, and while it did not pass the Senate, it is expected to be brought up again next year.

I find this incredibly alarming! Even more alarming, though, is that many Christians I know think it is a good thing.

Another thing I find alarming is all the pickup trucks that drive around with HUGE American flags flying from the pickup bed. Flying a flag at your house is one thing (though I don't do that), but from your vehicle? When did that start happening? When people began to worship their country!!

Thank you for sharing this important and eye-opening reflection.
As someone outside the U.S., I don’t fully understand the scope of Christian nationalism in your context — it’s not something I’ve encountered in the same way.
But I do know this: when we walk closely with Jesus, we’re drawn to love, not fear — and we long to be one with all who love Him, regardless of nation, race, or politics.
This post gave me a lot to think about, and I’m grateful for the gracious and thoughtful tone you brought to such a complex issue.

YOu Dutch friend: Aritha
