In reply to Kelvin Seah. Glad you found Yancey to be refreshingly authentic as well. I agree that parts of the book did drag a little (especially the beginning), but it all came together in the end. I hope he has more writings left to give us in the years ahead.

I just finished reading it this morning! There were parts of it that were a little draggy (and culturally foreign to me living in Asia), but in the end they were all necessary and signature Yancey. His raw, unfinished journey peppered with so much pathos and humility I dearly long to emulate. If only more Christian authors would be as authentic as he is. May he keep on sharing with us as God keeps pouring forth grace into his life, and by extension, into ours!

I’ve not read any Philip Yancey but it sounds as if I need to do just that.

Also, an interesting point you’ve raised – the two themes of one’s life. I’ll have to mull this over some. My initial response is family and faith, but it may go deeper than that.

Lisa, thanks for sharing your recent Yancey read, sounds like a winner. I am very familiar with his work, like many having chosen to walk with him a bit through my suffering. My two themes are similar to his, suffering and hope-because yes we will all walk the hard places, but they do not define us, only refine us, that we may become more like Him, that when we meet Him we shall know Him for we shall indeed be like Him.
