For what to say when a disagreement begins brewing, I appreciated this prompt in particular: “Let’s grab some coffee sometime so you can help me understand more of where you’re coming from.” (No pun intended, but it WAS fun when it turned up as I typed “brewing” and then “coffee!” But I digress…) Such a response puts us in a questioning mode rather than proving mode. Much more productive, no doubt. Thank you, Lisa!

Thanks for sharing this thorough review of Love Matters More.

Last year our small group did a marriage Bible study and it said that in a conflict resolution conversation for every negative word spoken, 5 positive words needed to be included as well. Basically, start off with the 5 positive before leading into the “negative” that you are trying to address. These words are not to be disingenuous, but genuine positivity leading into addressing the area of concern. It definitely helps with the reception of the correction for sure.

Lisa,
A lot of great analogies here that illustrate his points. (I’m big on illustrations.) So true that it’s “Who” we know, not what we know. I struggled, a lot, with sharing the truth in love with my kids when they were teens. I got frustrated with how they seemed bent on finding grey areas when scripture was pretty black and white. I know I could have served the truth with a larger dose of love and mercy.

Thank you for sharing this with us. Truth in love…it is something the body of believers struggle with for many years. We either tell people what they should and shouldn’t do with chastisement but lack that love and grace. Or we fall to the other side and only show love without that dose of truth. This book reminded me of a quote from Ruth Bell Graham that I ran into before I needed it. As she got older she resolved not to share her opinion “on every topic and at every opportunity. ”
I filled that one away, and now that I am “older” I am trying to live it.

This sounds like a marvelous book! I especially like the advice to practice saying, “I could be wrong.” I wish we would all say that more often–I’ll start with me!
